Prescriptions

Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions can be ordered via the NHS App. You can also attend the surgery to speak to a member of the admin team. Prescriptions will not be accepted over the telephone. Pharmacies can no longer request your medication on your behalf.

If you require a repeat prescription, to prevent you running out, please ensure you order in time allowing 72 hours’ notice (3 working days). The reason for this is due to the large number of requests we get. The doctors have to ensure they are prescribing safely and may need to check your notes before signing. The GP may need to decline requests for acute medications as they may not be suitable for long term use.

Medication will not be issued early unless you request for a specific reason e.g. going on holiday Please ensure this is mentioned on your request. If you have not had your medication for over 3 months you will be asked why and may need a review.

There are some items that the surgery will not issue either as an acute or on repeat. These are items that are generally available as “over the counter” medicines. Please visit the NHS website for further information

Medication Reviews

A medication review is a private, confidential meeting between you and a GP or another suitably qualified health professional to discuss your medicines. The discussion may take place over the phone or in person. The aim of the medication review is to check that you are prescribed the most appropriate medicines and that you get the best out of those medicines.

Tests may be made to determine whether the medicine is working (e.g. blood pressure checks). Monitoring may be necessary for the type of medication that you are on.

You will be asked how you are getting on with your medicines; so inform your health professional of any problems you may be experiencing with your medicines. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your medicines. If any changes need to be made to your medication, your agreement will be sought before changes are made.

A record of the review will be documented in your medical notes.

If you do not book a medication review when requested this will result in restrictions to ongoing prescription requests until such time that a medication review has been completed. This is to ensure that we are prescribing safely on an ongoing basis.

Repeated failure to book a medication review when requested may result in the practice asking you to register with a different GP practice as we take the prescribing of medications safely as a matter of importance for both patient safety and the GP/patient ongoing relationship.

Prescription Charges & Exemptions

The current prescription charge is £9.90 per item.

Prescription charges are for each item not each prescription. For example, if your prescription has 3 medicines on it you will have to pay the prescription charge 3 times.

Some items are always free, including contraception and medicines prescribed for hospital inpatients.

If you know you’ll have to pay for a lot of NHS prescriptions, it may be cheaper to buy a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC).
